In 1960s Australia, former convict Wally Mellish aspires to lead a peaceful life with his girlfriend Beryl. However, their tranquility is shattered when a visit from two police officers leads to a misunderstanding that escalates rapidly. This results in Wally, Beryl, and her child being confined in their home, encircled by armed police who mistakenly believe Wally is holding them hostage. The situation quickly turns into a media frenzy, and Wally unintentionally becomes a figurehead for the anti-war movement amidst the chaos of the standoff.
