The narrative follows Misha Brankov, a retired music professor, who uncovers his true heritage under extraordinary circumstances. At the location of a former Nazi concentration camp for Jews from World War II, a metal box containing documents is unearthed. This box was hidden by an inmate named Isaac Weiss in 1941. Misha learns that his biological parents, the Weiss family, entrusted him to their friends, the Brankovs, just before they were taken to the camp. Among the contents of the box is an incomplete musical piece titled “When Day Breaks,” composed by Isaac Weiss. As Misha delves into his past and identity, he uncovers the largely forgotten history of the Judenlager Semlin camp, a notorious Nazi execution site in what is now modern-day Belgrade. Concurrently, Misha becomes determined to finish the musical work begun by his father and to perform it at the site of the former camp—a goal he ultimately achieves after overcoming numerous challenges.
