In contemporary Manchester, Michael spends his days alternating between visits to the job center and time at the pub. A random encounter with Lee, followed by meeting her Uncle Ian and a wild night out, lands him a job as a bouncer at a massage parlor in the Northern Quarter. After seeing a customer die violently, Michael starts having vivid, bloody flashbacks and feels drawn into a mysterious and alluring underworld. Once he uncovers the secrets of what happens beneath Cloud 9, his life is irrevocably changed.
