Fifteen-year-old Richard, who faces learning challenges, yearns for stability, but his impulsive and troublesome brother, Polly, is driven by a need to keep moving. Their situation becomes more dire when a new landowner purchases the land they occupy, cutting off the electricity to their caravan and worsening their already unstable living conditions. A chance encounter with Annabel, the 17-year-old daughter of the new landowner, leaves Richard infatuated, while Polly forms a bond with the men operating a disreputable traveling fair.
