A young farmer and his father struggle to make ends meet with their scant corn harvest. In search of financial help, they descend from the mountains to the village, hoping to borrow money from relatives employed in jade mines or opium plantations. However, due to missing documents, deceit, and corruption, their relatives are also left destitute. In a desperate move, the father pawns his cow to buy a moped, enabling his son to work as a taxi driver. The son’s first passenger is Sanmei, who has returned to Myanmar to lay her grandfather to rest. She chooses not to return to China, opting instead to escape an arranged marriage and start anew with her son in her homeland. Sanmei takes a job as a drug courier and convinces the young farmer to become her driver.
