The Last Alaskans

In 1980, the U.S. government prohibited any new human settlements in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary that hosts a vast array of native wildlife and unspoiled landscapes, covering an area comparable to South Carolina. Today, just a few families are permitted to live in the refuge, residing in seven authorized cabins. In under a century, all existing permits will expire, leading to the complete absence of human inhabitants.
