Crime After Crime

The narrative follows the struggle to liberate Debbie Peagler, a survivor of severe domestic abuse who has been imprisoned. Despite spending over 26 years behind bars, this resilient African-American woman remains unbroken, having faced numerous injustices. Initially, she suffered at the hands of a deceitful boyfriend who abused her and coerced her into prostitution. Later, she was ensnared by prosecutors who sentenced her to prison due to her involvement in the murder of her abuser. Her story takes an unexpected twist two decades later when two novice land-use lawyers take on her case, drawing international attention to the complex issues at the intersection of domestic violence and the criminal justice system.
