Finding the Gold Within

Six young African American men from Akron, Ohio, embark on their college journey with the aim of challenging societal stereotypes and low expectations. Despite their initial self-assurance, they soon face the harsh realities of being away from home, leading to a series of personal challenges. Equipped with skills in critical and metaphorical thinking, and possessing a rare ability to express their inner thoughts, each protagonist offers a glimpse into his essence. Since the sixth grade, they have participated in an innovative mentoring program called ‘Alchemy, Inc.,’ which incorporates mythological tales, drumming, and writing. During biannual reunion workshops, they candidly share their struggles and successes with sincerity, intelligence, and heartfelt emotion. As the story unfolds, the six young men evolve before our eyes, whether dealing with racial tensions or seeking guidance from new friends, distant fathers, and wise grandmothers, displaying moments of introspection, contemplation, and exuberance.
